Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Niacinamide, also called vitamin B3, is the most studied cosmeceutical ingredient. Its skincare benefits are well-backed by science.

Research shows niacinamide can offer many benefits, such as improving the appearance of aged and photodamaged skin and enhancing moisturization.

While its precise mechanism of action is unclear, clinical studies have shown topical niacinamide to be effective in improving skin texture and the appearance of hyperpigmented spots, with improvement in red blotchiness and the reduction of the severity of fine lines. A clinical study shows that 4% niacinamide combined with 2% N-acetyl glucosamine can effectively lighten skin hyperpigmentation.

It has been shown to stimulate collagen synthesis and the production of ceramide, a lipid compound that contributes to the functional and structural integrity of the skin barrier. Theoretically, niacinamide may help the skin become more resistant to external irritants by improving barrier integrity.

  • Add to the water phase of formulations.
  • It can be added directly into a finished cream or base cream
  • Avoid use in acidic formulations to avoid hydrolysis and formation of nicotinic acid (which can be irritating to the skin)
  • The final pH of the product should be between 5.0-6.0, avoiding going above 6.0
  • Recommended Usage: 1-6%, up to 20%
  • Appearance: White granular powder
  • Solubility: Water soluble (100g/100ml)
