Alpha-ketoglutarate (α-KG) is a precursor of glutamine and plays a pivotal role in multiple metabolic processes. In skin care, it is a powerful anti-wrinkle and skincare ingredient working as a natural moisturizing factor (NMF), barrier function enhancer, collagen booster, Hair growth stimulator, muscle toner, and wound healer. Its detoxification property against free radicals shows its ability to prevent the deterioration of collagen and elastin.

An in vitro study on Alpha-Ketoglutarate demonstrates its ability to up-regulate mRNA expression of genes related to the maintenance of epidermal function. 

Only 1% of Alpha-ketoglutarate shows significant of wrinkle/fine line reduction (23.64%) on day 0, immediately after use. It significantly improves the appearance of the nasolabial groove and crow's feet by 15.23% on day 7 and 25.42% on day 56. The skin firmness and radiance also increased significantly, by 41.40% and 28.67%.
